: Hi,
: I am currently doing a project on "The Merchant of Venice"
: However, I a stuck on why The Merchant of Venice should not be
: ban in school.
John,
Well, I think that the main reason someone would want to ban this play from school is that it is anti-semitic, but I also think that one can see the character of Shylock as a sympathetic character who is only a man wanting revenge for the loss of his daughter, his money, and his dignity. Also, it can be portrayed so that Antonio looks like the bad guy, and Shylock to seem like a person instead of a "devil" or a "villain." I believe that Shakespeare can be interpreted in many ways as well. He could be showing sympathy in the character of Shylock, and cruelty in the Christians if you look beyond the mere words.
