As you may already know, Shylock doesn't like
Antonio, because Shylock is a Jew, and Antonio is
a CHristian. This scene gives us our first intro-
duction as to this very point.
When Shylock is invited to dinner by Banio
and Antonio Shylock makes it clear that he
doesn not approve of the way that they chose
do dine, and go abour their daily business.
Shylock even later says that he HATES Antonio
because Antonio is a Christian.
So Shylock makes the bond of taking a pound of
Antonio's flesh if Antonio does not repay him.
We will see later in the play that Shylock would
"rahter have the pound of Antonio's flesh than
twenty times the ammount of the sum owed him."
So, as you can see, this scene sets us up to see
dislike that Shylock already has for Antonio.
