: I have to write a paper on "Merchant of Venice" on two different topics. One is who do you think the hero is. Also what is the meaning of love in the play. Who portrays true love, false love, or one-sided love? Please help me with any info. you can. Thanks so much.

I think Portia is the heroine. She's so witty esp. in the trial scene. And she's the one who
thought of the way of defeating Shylock's evil plan.
Moreover, Portia is so genorous...as if she doesn't care about money at all.

True love? If you think Antonio is gay, then his love towards Banio must be true love, but one-sided. Shylock's love for
Leah is true love as well. But Jessica may not be turlly in love with Lorenzo, because she was so young when she eloped
so maybe she just likes Lorenzo at the first sight and didn't think of the consequences of her elopement.
Gratiano and Nerrisa seem to be a happy match. Banio loves Portia, but that's because she's fair and rich... so that's not sacred...
Hm...what do other ppl think?
