I feel sorry for the Jew in the play. He is the victim of prejudice early on and it has made him evil. I think that maybe Shakespear wrote this to please the audience at the time (who would have hated Jews) but being the genius that he was, he may have known that we, at this time, would have a different opinion so he dropped hints and excellent quotations by Shylock to make us realise that Antonio has made the Jew suffer.
