To tell you the truth I feel that Shylock is the real hero of the play. When he says "Hath not a jew eyes..." He is totally justified. Even when his daughter runs away with a christian with Antonio's hand behind it any body would feel a sense of revenge, not because of religion. If any body calls someone a cur or a cut throat dog any person who has even a 1/10000000th of self respect will roar up. It is totally justified that he should have taken the pound of flesh that he rightfully deserved. Thus maybe Portia is the villian who spoils Shylock's life beond repair.
