Would anybody like to share their thoughts on the role of the clown? The ideas I have so far is that he serves to relieve tension- but why?- or perhaps plays the same role as Feste in 12th Night; serving to reveal the truth behind the characters' deceptions. But this is a role which could have given him a far greater influence on the play's outcome- after all the entire plot relies on deception. All the clown gets to do is make a few simple puns. ("no, I hear not your honest friend, I hear you...") Admittedly this moves the plot on a little but couldn't one of the other marginal characters- Bianca, Lodovico, Gratiano, Montano- have done it? What does anyone else think?
